Op Upgrades on OZ SYD-ICN-SFO-ICN-SYD?
January 6th, 2009
As a UA 1K (* Gold) member, I was wondering how likely or frequent op upgrades occur on either the SYD-ICN (vv) or ICN-SFO (vv) flights, during June/July. I have heard loads are quite high usually in economy so I was hoping to get bumped up to J class with my status. Anyone input on that would be appreciated.
Also, does anyone know about whether all fare classes on OZ are eligible from Australia for full mileage points. I had read on an earlier forum that OZ was going to institute a rule that for more discounted fare classes, there would be no mileage accrual. Is there any truth to that?
Cheers

This is a really silly question. BTW, there is no mean of offense here.
If I were you, I would take UA flight from SFO to ICN as OZ code-share. Flying on a code-share flight will cost more, however 1K member for op-up on SFO-ICN during June/July is almost 100% guaranteed.
I'm not sure how is the load on that OZ flight, anyhow don't expect to get a op-up for C seat - mostly Business class is C, not J. Asiana would definitely upgrade their *G members first. FYI, Asiana's 777 doesn't have as many business seats as UA, so it's obviously hard to get an op-up as a non-OZ*G member.
UA would take any fare class for mileage earning, so don't worry about it. Just make sure to fly OZ code-share on UA for SFO-ICN in order to guarantee your op-up.
