OT: Active runway status at YYZ
January 6th, 2009
I want to take my nephews for their first plane spotting adventure and would rather avoid my favourite spot: by Aviation World and the 'Landing Strip'.

YYZ tower if you got a radio scanner ;)
Good if not great views! ^

You just need to select "Canadian Advisories". It's pretty reliable as well, I use it if I'm going to take my daughter out to watch planes (lets me know if they'll be coming in over Wendy's) ^
Bring a camera, spot the wildlife in the ravines and in the air whilst keeping an eye on wind direction/active runways.
The area along Convair Dr at the end of 06L/R offers some good vantage points.I'll have to try that out if the road traffic isn't too bad.

Have you tried the rather pleasant drive (briefly parallels 401) between Carlingview/Renforth and Britannia/Courtney Park/Dixie along Convair drive?

They are not in the street, but the signage is pretty interesting!

Select CYYZ (or whatever airport you are interested in)
while it doesn't specify active runways per se, you can usually tell by which LOC and GP are active.
Actually, if the OP has a scanner, he'd better off tuning to 120.825 or 133.1 (those being the primary and secondary ATIS frequencies, respectively). It'll give all the local information, including what runways are in use and for what purpose.
